Minecraft Ghast Pinata
Last summer I had no idea what minecraft was, until my 7 year-old son became obsessed with everything minecraft. He first began playing the game on my phone, and then we finally bought him the X-box 360 version. Every year we have a theme for his birthday, in the past it has been Disney's Cars, Curious George, Thomas The Train, SpongeBob, etc. So I asked what he wanted for his 2014 birthday theme and of course he said "MINECRAFT". As other bloggers have mentioned, there aren't any minecraft party supplies that you can purchase in store. I did see a few sites such as etsy, but I figured I could save money and make them myself. The party is February 22nd, so I still have time to complete a few projects. First up, Ghast piñata. I plan on having a candy buffet, so I don't think I'll actually put candy in it. I like it more for décor...and besides, I don't want to destroy all of my hard work.
First thing I did was find a box (12x12?), white crepe paper, and a printout of the Ghast face.
I tried to follow another blogger's instructions, but somehow misunderstood them, lol. So I ended up doing this the hard way. I cut strips of the crepe paper the same width as the box, stacked them, and then cut little slits into it. I'm sure there is an easier way to do this (fold & cut tissue paper) but I wasn't really thinking. This was very time consuming and I wish I had doubled the crepe paper because it was very thin and see through. I had to go back over it with another layer of crepe paper.
Anyway, I glued the crepe paper strips all around the box. As I mentioned before it was pretty thin & you could see the brown box underneath, so I filled in the gaps with more crepe paper strips. Before covering the top & bottle of the box with crep paper strips, I punched a small hole in the top and tied a string to it for hanging. Then hung varying lengths of crepe paper from the bottom for tentacles.
I cut the Ghast eyes & mouth out from the printout and glued them to the front.
AMC Walking Dead Premier Party
With The Walking Dead Season 4 returning with Episode 9 on February 9th, I decided to share a premier party we had last October (2013) for the beginning of Season 4. For some reason, I never got into Walking Dead. I’m not even sure if I had ever heard of it before last fall. But with last fall’s season premier approaching, I decided to get caught up by watching the marathon from the beginning. Wow, I couldn’t believe I passed this show up tuning into countless reality shows. After the marathon I was hooked, and couldn’t wait for the new season. So of course I wanted to have a premier party, and scoured the web for inspiration. The first thing I did was buy the zombie love plates, cups & napkins from a local party store. Then I moved on to food. I came across a photo of a skull covered with various sliced sandwich meat & cheeses. It was the most beautiful & grotesque platter I had ever seen…and oh, how I wanted one. So while browsing dollar tree I came across a plastic skull that would be perfect to re-create the meat platter with. I bought some sandwich meat & cheese from the deli and went to work. After sanitizing the skull, my husband began to assemble the thinly sliced meat around the skull, stuck in some gum shaped eye ball candy, and added the remaining meat & cheese to the platter. I loved the way it turned out. The platter was the centerpiece, but we also had buns to make sandwiches with, chips & various dips, little smokies, and cupcakes.
The cupcakes were regular white cake mix with vanilla frosting. I made zombie cupcake toppers but ran out of time to put them together, so I settled for eyeball candy I had purchased for Halloween. They did look like zombie eyes. I also had some skull & spider rings I added just because. I found some cute marshmallow skull pops I set out just for decoration.
I created water bottle labels with the walking dead logo & characters. I created my own template in word, cut, and glued on the bottle. Normally I would laminate the sheets before cutting & gluing, but I didn’t have the time. The labels got a little wet when the water was in the freezer, but no one really noticed.
It was so much fun. When gusts arrived we had the house completely dark. We all put zombie masks on and caught them off guard. I was hiding outside and snuck up behind them while my husband & brother in-law spooked them out inside! Hilarious!!!
Christmas 2013 Treats
These Christmas themed cake pops were really fun to make, but oh, how time consuming they are. I actually made these for my co-workers for our annual holiday lunch. Again I found inspiration on the web and decided to recreate my version.
Items used:- Cake mix
- Frosting
- Chocolate melts
- White sprinkles
- Pretzels
- Black food gel pen
- Mini marshmallows
- Red & brown sixlets
- Orange tic tacs
- Green candy melt (un-melted)
- Rolos
- Airhead extreme sour candy
- Red & White paper straws
- Christmas ribbon
- treat bags/sandwich bags
I laid all of my ingredients out on a plate for easy access. I found the red & white striped paper straws at Target in their Christmas aisle. I'm not going to go through the steps of making the cake, so lets get right to the fun part! For the reindeer, I dipped the cake pop into the chocolate and immediately began to decorate before it hardened. I cut the pretzels somewhat down the middle/side as to give it an "E" shape. This was tough, most broke apart, so I went through a lot of pretzels. I stuck those in for the antlers. Then for the eyes I cut one mini marshmallow in half and stuck them into the still wet chocolate, and placed either a red or brown sixlet on for the nose. Once hardened I drew on the eyes & mouth with a black gel icing pen.
For the snowman, I put two cake balls on the straw and dipped into white candy melts and sprinkled with white sugar sprinkles right away to get a snowy look. Then I added an orange tic tac for the nose before the chocolate hardened. For the scarf I used rainbow colored airhead extreme sour candy. They were wider than I wanted the scarf to be so I cut them in half down the middle and folded them around the snow man. Because I cut the candy in half, some snow men had different colored scarves. For the hat I added melted chocolate as glue in between an un-melted green candy melt and a rolo and placed on top of the snowman using more melted chocolate as glue. Once dry I used the decorating icing pen to draw on the eyes, mouth and buttons.
My son enjoying the reindeer & snowman cake pops he made himself!
My brother's girlfriend requested a fruit turkey similar to the one I made in my thanksgiving blog, but wanted only grapes. I followed the same steps as the other fruit turkey using just the grapes and honeydew melon as the body. For the head, I re-purposed the slice of melon I took from the bottom and used toothpicks to secure it. I attached mini marshmallows for eyes, a grape for the beak, and a leftover airhead extreme for the same scarf as the snowman cake pop. Finally I drew the eye dots with the black gel pen, and ended up with this very animated looking turkey.
My son really enjoyed making these marshmallow snowman pops. They very easy to make & far less time consuming than the cake pops. We took popsicle sticks and stacked three marshmallows (medium & jumbo). For the hat I flattened a marshmallow and placed another medium marshmallow on top. I colored it by mixing the black gel pen with water and painting it on with a small paint brush. I took a green icing pen to go along the middle of the hat. I used the same pen to draw the eyes & mouth. The nose was made out of a broken orange sixlet...I could have just used the orange tic tacs left over though. I originally were drawing the buttons on with a blue gel pen but it began to drip & looked bad, so I wiped it off & used leftover green sixlets, but the blue still shows through...oh well! I drew the scarf with the green icing pen, and stuck in toothpicks for arms.
Thanksgiving 2013 - Fruit Turkey
I know the title sounds gross, but it's just fruit shaped like a turkey! Again, this was my first time trying this out. Ingredients used:
- Bag of mixed fruit
- Container of grapes
- Honeydew melon
- One slice of pinapple
- Leftover cherries
- Wooden skewers
If I were to do this again I would definitely use fresh fruit or frozen fruit...leaning towards fresh because its more firm, this baby dripped like crazy, and got really soggy. It was cute while it lasted! lol. I cut a small slice off the bottom of the honeydew to give it a base to sit on & not tilt over. Then I made fruit kabobs on the skewers and placed around the back of the melon. For the head I placed a cherry & peach slice on a toothpick and stuck into the melon. I had a leftover slice of pineapple from a ham I was baking and added it around the neck just for artistic value. For the wings I took more peach slices and adhered them onto the sides with toothpicks. I made two of these, one for my parents dinner and the other for my in-laws.
They also made great centerpieces for dinner!!!
My nephew & son devouring the cake pops...yes they were very hyper after that!
Thanksgiving 2013 - Turkey Cake Pops
Can you believe these are my very first cake pops I ever made??? I can't either!!! They were super easy, but very time consuming. I scoured Google & Pinterest for thanksgiving cake pop ideas, and came across something similar to these, So I set off to gather supplies on a budget. The original idea called for oreos, but oreos are pricey, so I went with some off brand chocolate striped cookies from the dollar store, and more came in the pack...score!!!
- Wilton's chocolate candy melts
- Chocolate striped cookies
- Chocolate cake
- Chocolate frosting
- Candy corn
- Candy fruit slices
- Lollipop sticks
I followed the typical cake pop recipe I seemed to run across on the web. Baked a chocolate cake, let it cool, then crumbled it up and added half a can of frosting. I rolled the cake into balls, I seemed to get 20 balls from one cake...and they were nice sized balls...maybe a little too big/heavy, especially after the chocolate & candy because one fell off the stick. Then I placed all the balls in the freezer for 30 minutes to firm up.
While the balls were in the freezer, I assembled the tails. I took the chocolate striped cookie and placed it chocolate side up. Poured a few drops of melted chocolate along the top half of the cookie, then placed 7 candy corns on the melted chocolate. I let those set until dried.
Then I moved onto the faces. I took un-melted candy melt and added a drop of chocolate and placed a candy corn on it for a beak. At first I placed the candy corn with the beak sticking out but it took too long to set & I had to hold it there for a few minutes. So eventually I just placed them flat. I cut the triangular ends of the candy corn for eyes and cut red fruit slices in a thin triangular shape for the wattle. By the time I finished the tails and faces, the cake balls were firm. I took the balls from the freezer and melted more chocolate. I dipped the end of the lollipop stick into my melted chocolate and then into the cake ball. After all cake pops were set, I dipped each one into melted chocolate and placed directly onto the cookie/candy corn turkey tails. Once those were dry, I dabbed a little melted chocolate on the front and added the face. As I mentioned before it got pretty heavy and one fell apart, while others fell over...but they were so hard it didn't break! lol. I decided to place them into my cake pop holder and display them with the rest of the Thanksgiving desserts.
I also placed a few that I were giving away into the plastic container that the candy corns came in. I added a cute autumn themed ribbon, which is not shown for an added touch!
Breakfast At Tiffany's Bridal Shower
Most of the décor was purchased at Party City because they had the closest color to Tiffany blue, which is called robin’s egg blue. I purchased the plates, table cloths, napkins, plastic ware, streamers, tissue poms, anything else I could find in that color! The shower took place in my parents backyard under a small tent. I also ordered two black cardboard chandeliers from amazon to hang from the center of the tent.
I added small centerpieces to all the tables that I recycled from my oldest brother's wedding. They consisted of small flower bouquets from Michael's, vases from Dollar tree, blue jewel filler, and tied on a robin's egg blue ribbon. They added a nice touch! The banner I custom created by taking various images of Audrey Hepburn and girly items (lip prints, make-up, etc.) and printed them out, laminated it, punched holes and strung ribbon through.
We had a ton of food. We set it up buffet style with pork & turkey bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, quiche, casseroles, hash browns, croissants, breads, mini sandwiches, granola & berry yogurt parfaits, fruit martinis with blinged ribbon tied around the base, mini powdered donuts, and cupcakes made by me! My mother, brother, fiancé, mother-in-law, bridesmaids, and myself all prepared the food. For the cupcakes I made plain vanilla cupcakes. For the icing I took regular vanilla icing and mix 2 parts blue & 1 part green gel icing coloring from Party City, which gave me a lovely tiffany blue color. For the bow I ordered a bow shaped popsicle mold from amazon. I couldn't find a mold with the size bow I wanted, so I just used the large blow popsicle mold without creating popsicles. The only issue I encountered was I had to be careful when pouring the white candy melts into the mold and avoiding the area where the stick is supposed to go. Sometimes I ended up with a partial chocolate stick, which I just cut off with a knife.
I also places various framed Audrey Hepburn photos around the tables just for décor, or in case anyone couldn't guess the theme of the shower!
The guestbook was a blank white canvas where each guest signed with their lip print & signature. In case they needed lip stick/gloss, I purchased a bunch in the dollar section of Target and placed in a tiffany blue tin, also found in Target's dollar section. I framed the directions as well instructing guests what to do. The first game we played started as soon as guests arrived. Next to the sign in was a jewelry hanger holding long strands of pearls. Each guest were to take one and had to refer to me as Darling or Bride, otherwise they would get their pearls stolen...similar to the clothes pin baby shower game. It was such a hit! The second game was "what's in your purse". I created my own version with items actually found in my purse and if the guests had it in theirs, they get points. The person with the most points win. I added an image of Hepburn to that sheet as well. The third game was the traditional toilet paper wedding dress game. I asked each team to re-create my wedding dress.
For favors I created custom water bottle templates in word with Bride & Co. and image of Hepburn, printed them, laminated, cut out, and hot glued to regular water bottles. Added a blinged ribbon from Michael's and ta da!!!
I also created a DIY backdrop for photos. I took some leftover robin's egg blue table cloths and taped them to the front of the garage. Hung L.O.V.E. letters left over from our engagement party, and had a cardboard cutout of Hepburn I ordered from oriental trading. My fiancé took the pics for everyone & it was so much fun.
After the shower, I took leftover tiffany blue cardstock I had used for my wedding programs and created custom thank you cards. I used a template I found online & edited it with my info and made it longer than the original to fit all the info. I used a group photo from the shower at the bottom, then thanked all guests by describing how I used each of their gifts! Added a white ribbon & hand delivered them!
